Nasty Blaq Interview With The Punch

Abisi Ezechukwu, popularly known as Nastyblaq, is an online comedian with a following of over 200,000 on Instagram. Known for his sarcastic videos, he tells TOLUWALOPE KAREEM about his journey so far

How did your journey into comedy start?

Back in high school, I was seen as a funny guy in the classroom because I usually made people laugh. After school, I decided to take it to the next level by creating content and doing comedy skits. Now, I am here.

You started uploading skits in 2018 and you have over 200k followers now. How were you able to grow such a fan base within a short period?

Actually, I didn’t start posting videos in 2018; I started in 2016. But, it was not too serious; I just did it for fun then. I only took it professionally in 2017. When I started, I wasn’t getting much attention but I did not lose hope. I kept pushing until last year when my content went viral and from then, I started putting more effort into it.

You are usually sarcastic in your skits. Is that your true personality?

Yes, I can say that is who I am. I remember back then, my friends used to say I acted stupid because I was always acting funny. So, at a time, I thought of using the act of stupidity to bring out creativity. And that is what I did.

What kind of child were you?

I was a stubborn child. I always did what nobody wanted me to do. I remember when I started comedy, my family didn’t want me to do it. But I was so stubborn and did it despite their disapproval. I can die for my dream; that is just the kind of person I am.

Do your parents support you now?

They have come to accept it. My father once said to me, “My son, Ezechukwu, I know you will make it. I know you will become somebody.” Everyone is proud of what I am doing.

Apart from comedy, what else do you do?

I am also a forex trader. Next year, I am thinking of teaching young people how to make money from forex trading.

Most of your videos are centred on relationships between men and women. Why is that?

I try to bring what is happening in relationships to reality, focusing on the comedy angles. Aside from that, I like to talk about real facts of life. Just like in my skit about village people, I was driving a Benz but by the time I got to my village, I took a bicycle because I didn’t want to be seen as extremely rich to avoid unnecessary expectations. Inasmuch as I try to make people laugh, I’m also trying to educate them that when they are going to the village, it is not a time to show off. One has to be smart.

A fellow comedian recently called out other comedians for harassing women in their skits. What’s your take on that?

I can’t really say but we could be biased in this country. When we do something with a girl, they say we are sexually harassing them but when the same thing is done to a male, it wouldn’t be regarded as such. I feel that females are given preference and people tend to focus only on harassment of women. There was a video done by Sydney Talker where he beat me with a belt and no one talked about it because I am a man, though it was actually harassment.

I don’t feel we are harassing any girl; we are not harassing anybody. All we do is create content and females are aware and are part of the content. I am not promoting rape or sexual harassment. I can never do that. All I do is for the sake of comedy– for people to laugh. If the females (used in the skits) do not agree with it, they would not do it. We learn every day. If we make a particular content and someone calls our attention to the fact that it is offensive, we would do something about it.

Have you ever been attacked for  any of your posts?

Negative comments are inevitable, though I don’t read comments at all. The same way I get praises is the way I get backlash from people. I consider it to be normal.

Some people say that you are trying to copy Sydney Talker in your skits. Is that true?

I am not trying to be like anybody. I write my content very well. I am Nastyblaq and my content is original to me. I don’t act like anybody. My facial expressions are original. If I am acting like anybody, the person should boldly come out and say it. And anybody that is comparing me (to anybody) should bring out a video and the public should judge. However, people are entitled to their opinions.

It is said that most comedians recycle and repackage jokes. Do you do that too?

Someone’s colleague could put on a white T-shirt, black trouser and a pair of shoes to work, yes? What if another person was putting on a white shirt, jean jacket, black trousers and shoes? It is the same white shirt, just that the other person added more spices to it. With that analogy, I want to differentiate between stealing content and being creative. Some people steal other people’s content and some people create something new out of another person’s content. Those are two different things. Something can inspire you to do something else, yet some people would watch you and steal exactly what you did.

In what way do you intend staying relevant in the industry?

For now, I feel like I am still up and coming. There are different stages in life. Right now, I think the best thing I can do is to be consistent. I have to keep creating content.

Is it safe to say you have started making money through social media?

Yes, I can say that. But social media is not my only source of income. My mum always tells me not to ‘put all your eggs in one basket’. I am doing well with comedy and I know that someday, it will grow bigger.

Do you think social media is a viable way for youths to make a living in Nigeria?

Yes, it is. There is a lot of money in Nigeria; one just has to know the right channel to access it. One has to be smart.

What are the challenges you face in the course of your career?

Most times, when one creates content and people don’t accept it well, it could make one feel bad; or if one doesn’t have an audience. However, one shouldn’t stop; one has to keep pushing.

How much effort goes into producing your skits?

Recently, I left Lagos to Abuja to shoot skits in-flight. There is a whole lot happening and one has to spend a lot to shoot content.

What advice do you have for young people who want to be like you?

For every young person out there, I could be an inspiration to you but don’t be like me exactly. Have your own life but let me inspire you. Let me be the inspiration for you to achieve all you can.

Which of your videos brought you into the limelight and were you expecting such attraction when you made the video?

I cannot really say a particular video brought me to the limelight. There were a couple of them. The last one I did is trending now, even on Twitter.
